7.6. Why SSL is required

Spark doesn't support insecure connections. We care greatly about secure environment and take steps necessary to ensure our customers' correspondence safety, i.e. to encrypt sensitive information sent across the Internet so that only the intended recipient can understand it. When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to. This protects it from hackers and identity thieves including phishing threat.

That's why you should enable SSL or STARTTLS for your email account before adding it in Spark.
